What is LED flood light?
LED stands for “light emitting diode”. Floodlights are broad-beamed, high-intensity artificial lights. They are often used to illuminate outdoor playing fields while an outdoor sports event is being held during low-light conditions.
Flood Lighting Techniques
There are several techniques that can be implemented by using flood light fixtures in landscape lighting. The easiest methods are simply positioning flood lights as an uplight or downlight, but there are more advanced techniques.
- Wall washing: Used to spread a uniform light across large areas, such as the facade of a building.
- Wall grazing: Used to highlight the patterns of stone walls, tree trunks, climbing vines, or other objects with textured surfaces. Accomplished by placing the light fixture about a foot away from the highlighted object and pointing the light straight up.
- Shadowing: Achieved by positioning the light to cast the shadow of an object in front of it onto a wall.
* Lamp spacing between fixtures should be equal to the distance the fixtures are placed away from the wall.
How You're Using LED Flood Light Fixtures Wrong
Many believe that the brighter your outdoor lighting is, the better your outdoor lighting is. This isn't the case. Highlighting trees, shrubs, and flower beds doesn't take as much light as you may expect, only about 1000 Lumens at the most. Larger fixtures with brighter outputs are better for illuminating entrances or entire lawns. If you need to light up large spaces, like a sports arena, check out our LED flood light.
Be sure to evenly space out your lights, not too far apart and not too close. Installing your lights too far apart can cause dark areas and shadows throughout your lighting design. Placing them too close together can cause unnecessary glare and overly bright areas. Having uniform lighting is incredibly important not only aesthetically, but when it comes to security. Bright or dark spots, or high-contrast areas, can make it more difficult to see at night especially for cameras.
If you're using a remote with your LED flood lights, you may have had some issues getting it to work perfectly all the time. Radio frequency (RF) remotes can operate through wall and furniture, but can experience interference if it's on the same frequency as nearby electronics. Infrared (IR) remotes don't have to deal with electronic interference, but they cannot work through walls and must have line-of-sight with the fixture.
